Peeling the Skin Everything You Wanted to Know

What are peels? Peels are a chemical means of exfoliation. Most peels do not make your skin come off in sheets. They can range from gentle enzymes that only take off the top layer of the skin, to strong acids that reach down into the dermis. What is the difference between scrubs and peels? Scrubs make tiny slashes in the skin, resulting in uneven exfoliation and can cause irritation. Peels on the other hand exfoliate evenly. Chiral peels have the added benefit of leaving little to no irritation. What are chiral peels? Chiral or chirality refers to the way a molecule is shaped in a natural substance. In the drug and cosmetics field, when something has been 'chirally corrected' it means that the left or right handed molecule has been separated out, either because it is irritating or does not produce the intended results. A chiral peel therefore is the safest peel. Why should you have a peel? Peels have many advantages. They make the skin brighter by removing the dull, dead surface skin cells, which in turn makes your serums and creams penetrate the skin better, allowing you to use less, giving you more value for your money and a more beautiful complexion. What conditions do they help? Just about every skin condition benefits from peels. They help treat acne by removing the hardened plugs that block pores from expelling their natural oils. They are anti-aging because they stimulate the skin, boosting its turn over rate, much as it was in our younger years. They treat hyperpigmentation (dark spots) caused by the sun, liver damage, inflammation, injuries, and hormones by lifting off the layers of pigmentation faster than the body would do on its own. They minimize large pores by removing the layers of stretched out dead skin. They help to control rosacea by removing excess buildup of nodulated skin and decreasing the skin mite population that further irritates this condition, making penetration of healing products more affective. Will peels cause cancer? No! In fact when skin cancer is found, after removing the lesion (many times done by a peel or laser) the dermatologist will recommend a peel for preventative measures, since peeling stimulates new growth and removes old damaged cells. What is the best time of year to do peels? Depends. Generally winter is the best time for deep peels since sun exposure is more limited, but if you are a skier, another time of year could be better. A light to medium depth peel can be done anytime of year, as long as you are in good health. Are peels right for you? Probably. There are a few instances where peeling would not bring a positive result, such as when the skin is dehydrated, if you are going on vacation, are undergoing chemotherapy, or have any condition that severely weakens your immune system. The healthier you are, the better result you will get. How often should you do them? Depending on the depth of the peel, you can have one every two weeks to once a month. For maintenance purposes, peels are recommended 1-4 times a year, according to your needs. What is the cost? The peels I use range in price from $70-$250, for single layer peels. To get maximum benefit, many times I will boost and layer peels for your specific issues. I have created treatment packages designed to give maximum results without nickel and diming your pocketbook. Call for a Q and A session and we can discuss what would work best for you.
